For skiers, all the area mountains have terrific snow cover and conditions. Likewise for the cross-country skier crowd, Prospect Mountain in Woodford, and Wild Wings in Peru, both have lots of snow. If you prefer to cross country ski in natural conditions (no groomed trails) I highly recommend Woodford State Park on Route 9, which is closed in the winter but open to cross country skiers at no charge. Do not park right in front of the entrance to the park, instead travel a very short distance east of the park entrance to an off-road public parking area on the north side of the road.

This is also a great year for snow shoeing. One of my favorite spots is the trail to Little Pond also on Route 9 in Woodford, or the public access trail on Dorset Mountain located off Dorset Mtn. Road.

Snowmobiling is also very popular in our area, and there are hundreds of miles of trails. Contact VAST (Vermont Association of Snow Travelers) for more details.

Stay warm!

First Big Snow in The Shires

Like most of the country, we got hit hard and heavy with the first major snow of the season. Of course this is a source of great joy to all of us who are eager to get out and ski or snowshoe, snowmobile or sled! The day after Thanksgiving is the official start of the Christmas shopping season and most of the shops in our area are having sales to celebrate. Shopping our local downtowns is a really nice alternative to fighting the traffic and crowds at the mall. It also supports the local community and preserves the character of our region that makes us unique.

On a personal note, if you are looking for handcrafted jewelry, pottery, glass, wood, or fine gifts, consider stopping by the Hawkins House craftsmarket in Bennington, Vermont. This second generation business was started by my parents in 1977 and is today run by my wife Elizabeth Ganger. It's a really fun store that is well liked by both locals and travelers (many come year after year). The Hawkins House is located on North Street, two blocks north of four corners in downtown Bennington.

Thanksgiving is also traditionally a popular time for hunting, so remember to wear red or orange if you are out hiking this weekend. I'm not personally a hunter, but hunting is a vital part of wildlife management and the license fees also support a wide range of non-game conservation programs.

Again, have a great holiday!

Early winter in the Shires

Everyone is gearing up for Thanksgiving, so not a lot of events this weekend. I love this time of year. The leaves are down and you can see a lot when hiking outside.

Hunting season continues, so if you are hiking remember to wear red or blaze orange. Cold weather has stopped the black flies and mosquitos, but it's prime season for ticks, so remember to check carefully for unwanted "visitors" after you hike. Ticks in our area carry Lyme disease so this is important. Remember, Lyme disease takes at least 24 hours to transfer from a tick to you... so as long as you check and remove any ticks you don't have to worry about catching the disease. Common Lyme Disease symptoms are aches, and flu-like symptoms MINUS the runny nose. (With runny nose, it's probably the flu!) A bulls-eye shaped rash often occurs at the site of the bite, but not always. Lyme is easily cured if caught early. If you have had a tick on you for more than 24 hours, and show symptoms, you should consult your doctor!

Vermont: one of the best places in the world.

Here is an interesting bit of information for you... Vermont scored high in worldwide stewardship ranking. It is true that peak foliage has passed and the leaves are mostly gone at the upper elevations, but the valleys still are showing lots of color. This is a great time of year to drive along Route 7 from Williamstown, MA, to Bennington. From Bennington, take Historic Route 7A through the towns of Shaftsbury, Arlington, and Manchester. Stop at local farm stands and pick out a pumpkin for Halloween!

Speaking of Halloween, this Saturday is the Pumpkin Challenge in downtown Bennington. Here are the details:

Voted Vermont's #1 Downtown Event for 2009, and the Vermont Chamber of Commerce Top Ten Fall Events for four years in a row!!!

Join us on October 24th for a day full of activities in downtown Bennington. This year St. Francis will be holding their annual Harvest Bazaar on the same day so there will be plenty to do!

12:00 - 8:00PM Store to Store Trick or Treating Dress up the kids and bring them trick or treating in all of our shops and restaurants in the downtown area. The new, safe and fun way to celebrate the holiday. Look for the Bright Orange posters on the door of the businesses that are participating!

12:00 - 8PM Whitman's Hay Maze at Center StageEven the very young one's love Whitman's Hay Maze. Let the kids run through the maze as you take a break from all the activities.

12:30 - 1:30PM Bennington Library Creative Workshop Get the kids ready for the parade at the Library's Workshop. Last weekend was a nice start, but the cool evenings and warmer days this past week have done their magic, and I'm ready to officially say that foliage color will peak this weekend!

This is also the final weekend for the decorated Moose in Bennington to be on the streets. If you've not seen them, they are fantastic! Over 50 bull, cow, and calf moose are positioned throughout Bennington as part of MOOSEFEST. Maps are available at many retail locations and restaurants, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Welcome Center.

After this weekend, the moose will migrate to the Bennington Center of the Arts in preparation for the MOOSEFEST GALA & AUCTION on October 17. A black-tie optional event, this is your chance to bid on your favorite moose, or just to joint the excitement watching the auction. There is wine, food, live music and dancing at this event also. Hopefully you were able to make it to Vermont LAST weekend for the Garlic Festival -- it was a huge success and a lots of fun!

This weekend the weather won't be quite as nice, but nonetheless ANY weekend is a good weekend to rejuvenate yourself by spending some time in the Green Mountains. A good think to remember is that the beautiful foliage starts early in the mountains... I expect there to be good color showing at higher elevations starting this weekend. The color works it's way down toward the valleys culminating in peak foliage color usually by the second weekend in October.

There are as always things happening this weekend:

September 10th - Bennington Library Open House. Located at Camelot Village (on Route 9 just west of downtown Bennington), this is a terrific event for all ages... and for garlic lovers in particular! For details, visit: http://www.lovegarlic.com/

While you are in the area, make sure to take a drive or stroll through Bennington to see the 50+ decorated moose... part of this year's MOOSEFEST. These life size moose are truly amazing and well worth the trip. You can pick up maps showing all the moose locations at the Downtown Welcome Center in downtown Bennington, or at the Chamber of Commerce office... or at most retail shops and restaurants downtown.

Looks like the weather will be great this weekend... hope to see you all in Bennington!

Music and the Fair comes to The Shires

This is the final weekend for music under the tent on Main Street in Bennington. But take precautions...

It's been a rainy week, but the weather for this weekend looks like it will be very nice! This is a wonderful time of year to get outside in Vermont, and here's a few tips for you.

Trout Fishing is in full swing! We have lots of wonderful trout fishing spots to discover. I personally recommend the Walloomsac River in Bennington. Not only is the fishing very good, but the three covered bridges make for very scenic surroundings. There are good access points for fishing at both the Silk Road Covered Bridge and the Henry Bridge. The Papermill Bridge is less accessible. All three bridges are located off Route 67A between Bennington and North Bennington. I'd be remiss if I did not also mention the world famous Battenkill River in Manchester and Arlington. This is often more crowded than the Walloomsac, but often worth it. While you are up that way, you might want to visit ORVIS in Manchester and the American Museum of Fly Fishing. Both are located on route 7A south of Manchester Center.

Hiking is one of my favorite activities. While the leaves are fully out in the valleys, in the mountain tops you'll still see spring flowers and the leaves have that "new green" color that I love. One nice hike is to Harmon Hill. This hike starts with a very steep ascent, but then moderates to a more comfortable hike to an open hilltop with terrific views of Bennington and Mount Anthony. The trailhead is located east of Bennington on Route 9. Look for the Long Trail sign and follow the trail South.

Wherever adventure takes you in Vermont... remember to bring plenty of bug repellent. The blackflies (small biting insects) can be very fierce this time of year. Deer ticks are another pest to watch out for. These ticks are smaller than the more common dog tick... the smallest not much bigger than a speck. These ticks may carry Lyme Disease, which is easily treatable in it's early stages but can become chronic if not caught in time. Using insect repellent will discourage ticks as well, but if you do find one on you don't panic. A tick has to have been attached to you for more than 24 hours for there to be any significant risk of transmittal of the disease. It's a ritual in our family to check nightly for ticks (you don't need to go hiking to pick them up... they are everywhere!) and pull off any we find.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thisisvermont.blogspot.com/2009/05/get-outside-but-take-precautions.html' title='Get outside! In particular, the apple blossoms are now in full bloom and are filling the air with their sweet scents. If you are in the Bennington area, try taking a drive on Carpenter Hill Road (about 1 mile south of Bennington's four corners downtown on Route 7) to see the apple orchards in full bloom. The orchard owners had to install fencing to keep out the deer, so you can't wander about, but just the effect from the road is gorgeous. The lilacs are also in bloom, and you can see literally HUNDREDS of lilac bushes while following the John Dostal Lilac Trail in Bennington. Visit the Downtown Welcome Center in Bennington (located just south of four corners in Downtown Bennington) for more information.

Happy Mother's Day!

How about taking mom out to Vermont for dinner? For a complete listing of area events, check out our EVENTS page.

Changes at This Is Vermont

For those of you who have been following our website ThisIsVermont.com... you may have noticed a difference over the last few years... namely, NOTHING was updated!

Well, in 2006, after 20 years in publication and 11 years on the web, we had sold the publication. Sadly, the sale did not go well, and after three years we are now back in control of the publication and website. We are sad it did not work out, but happy because frankly, the new owners did live up to our hopes, and the lack of work on the website was an example of that.

We have already updated our Events list... something we always used to be very proud of. We'll also be keeping our blog up to date, and will be implementing a total overhaul of the site and design over the next few months.

Thanks for visiting our website!

Fun things to do in 'Stick Season'

Well... it's "Stick Season" now... that time of year that the leaves have gone from the trees and the skies are grey. But that doesn't mean there aren't fun things to do in Southern Vermont!

It's a great time of year to really see the landscape of our fair southern Vermont, but do keep in mind it's also hunting season. Check with the state parks, or local hiking experts for the best places to take a walk in the woods. Protected land spaces are best, try a visit to Merck Forest in Rupert, or a stroll thru the trails at the New England Tropical Conservancy off of Route 7 in Bennington, near the Apple Barn. Or, check with the friendly folks at Nature's Closet in Bennington for other safe bets for woodsy strolls this time of year.

Looking for some pre-holiday fun? The Bennington Museum offers a "Holiday Shopping Blowout" on November 24th and 25th with a special sale in their gift shop, as well as their "Festival of Trees" and more holiday events. More great holiday shopping is available at local shops throughout the weekend including Hawkins House, at 262 North St. The 2nd Congregational Church hosts the ever popular "Snowball Bazaar" on December 1st and 2nd. A great place to pick up local gifts, old and new. Don't forget the town Christmas Tree Lighting at Merchant's Bank Park in downtown Bennington on December 1st, 7-8:30, plus a visit from Santa. And bring an ormanent to add to the town tree!

For more events this time of year, visit our Southern Vermont event listings! This program is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Speakers Bureau of the Vermont Humanities Council. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

Dorothy Canfield Fisher is considered by many to be the one of the nation's most popular novelists. In addition to her prolific writings, she was a woman of great influence and a groundbreaker, especially in the field of education. Eleanor Roosevelt once called her one of the ten most influential writers in the United States.

An Arlington native, Fisher wrote 22 works of fiction and 18 non-fiction books on many subjects throughout her lifetime. Her short stories, novels, and non-fiction had to do with American values. In 1953 she wrote Vermont Tradition, which is considered a hugely successful effort to express the qualities that make Vermont special.

Fisher was also the person to bring the Montessori method of child rearing to America after meeting with Dr. Maria Montessori in Rome. Her interest in children's education and the methods shared with her by Dr. Montessori led Fisher to write several books on the subject. Fisher also presided over the country's first adult education program. She was the first woman to serve on the Vermont Board of Education. In addition to her many other achievements, Fisher influenced popular literary tastes in America as a member of the Book-of-the-Month-Club Selection Committee from 1926 to 1951.

In addition to the Bennington program, Dorothy Canfield Fisher will be the subject of an exhibition at this year's Vermont History Expo in Tunbridge on June 24-25. Many local historical societies will feature the theme of "Vermont Women in History" in their exhibits this year. Helene Lang's portrayal of Dorothy Canfield Fisher at the Bennington Museum will provide a captivating introduction to the theme of notable Vermont women. Come enjoy this living history presentation and then plan to visit Vermont History Expo, which the State Chamber of Commerce calls one of "Vermont's Top Ten Summer Events."

Helene Lang is a former University of Vermont professor who taught literature and literacy for many years. Born in Massachusetts and educated at Boston University, Lang has also taught in public schools and for the United States Navy overseas. She and her husband have three sons and five grandchildren.

The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main St. (Route 9) one mile west of the intersection of Routes 7 and 9 in downtown Bennington, Vermont. The first day the museum opens will also mark the opening of the 2006 Student Art Show which runs through March 24. The art work of regional elementary, middle, and high school students will be on display in the museum's changing exhibits gallery.

This year the annual student art show will explore the longstanding relationship between art and education. Along with the art created by current students, the museum will also be displaying a selection of works created by local schoolgirls and boys during the nineteenth century. These early works, including hand-drawn watercolor maps and needlework samplers, drawn from the museum's permanent collection, make clear that art has long been an integral part of our region's educational curriculum. All the works on display, both historic and contemporary, demonstrate that art can provide students a creative means to explore topics as diverse as geography, reading and writing, science, and the history of art itself. The museum hopes that this juxtaposition of old and new will encourage viewers to contemplate the continuing role that art plays in the education of local students today.

The schools participating this year are Arlington Memorial High School, Bennington Elementary School, The Bennington School, Cambridge Elementary, Catamount Elementary, Grace Christian School, Hiland Hall School, Hoosick Falls Middle/High School, Monument Elementary, Mount Anthony Union High School, Mount Anthony Middle School, North Bennington Graded School, Pownal Elementary, Shaftsbury Elementary, Southshire Community School, Williamstown Elementary, Woodford School.

Also on exhibit from February 26 through May of 2006 is Sitting Around: Chairs from the Collection, on display in the main lobby. Despite their utilitarian purpose, American craftsmen have created an endless variety of chairs that express the cultural attitudes of the time and place in which they were created. This installment will showcase highlights from the museum's collection of early American chairs.

Admission is free all day on February 26 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Regular admission applies after the opening event. Light refreshments will be available during the event. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the improvements and changes that have been made to the museum, as well as peruse the creative expressions of our local students.

The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main St. (Route 9) one mile west of the intersection of Routes 7 and 9 in downtown Bennington, Vermont. The installation allows for free
internet service for anyone within the coverage area, which is directed
towards the center of town and reaches as far as Panda Garden on Main
Street. Having a wireless node is a way for the museum to become even
more accessible to the public and share their bandwidth with others.
Visitors will be able to bring their laptop to the museum and enjoy the
research library, the café, or even the outdoor pavilion when weather
permits.
The theory behind wireless networking, or WiFi, is that internet
is available free to everyone in the community. Local individuals or
businesses can host a node and donate some of their bandwidth to the
project. As more nodes are installed, the area of coverage will increase
for wireless users.
Long Trail Wireless is a volunteer group that installs nodes in
public places such as parks and coffee shops. In 2005 founders Ron
Hausthor and David Pearson launched a plan to cover Bennington with
wireless access. With a small group of volunteers they have succeeded
in bringing several nodes to town that allow internet access in both
Bennington and North Bennington. The week leading up to Christmas had businesses across southern Vermont bustling with last minute holiday sales to both customers from around the world and across the street ready to enjoy a Vermont Christmas.

Personally, my family and I started Christmas Eve by packing up our backpacks, getting in the car, and heading to the Blue Benn Diner, in Bennington. After a short wait, we had a great breakfast (real egg omelets for my parents, tofu scramble for me), accompanied by some holiday music from the jukebox. Soon after, we stopped by Smoker's Den, also in Bennington, to pick up the day's newspaper before continuing our journey. Our destination was Merck Forest and Farmland Center, in Rupert, VT, to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas in a cozy cabin deep in the woods. We had been planning this for a while (you have to, Merck Forest is most popular during the winter, and you have to make reservations months in advance for a cabin! Feel free to call them anytime to check availability though, you never know, and they're always open for dayhikes). There was just enough snow on the ground and chill in the air on Friday, Christmas Eve, to make our hike in to the cabin feel festive. There are a number of cabins at Merck, my family's favorites are Ned's Place and Nenorod, but I can safely say I've slept at least one night in almost every cabin! After about an hour and a half of easy hiking (with a little ice), we got to Nenorod, and found that the people who stayed in our cabin the night before had left us a nice bed of hot coals in the woodstove. Before we knew it, the cabin was warm and cozy, with Christmas tunes on the portable radio and food cooking on the camp stove. Of course, many thanks to the Merck staff and volunteers, who were thoughtful enough to stack firewood right outside the door, ensuring only a few frigid seconds outside to get wood when the fire started to die down! Christmas Eve was a beautiful, clear night, and despite the brisk temperatures, my father and I spent quite a long time looking at the stars and the barely visible lights of New York state with binoculars. If you're around Vermont in the winter, don't be intimidated by the cold! If it is a clear night, put your jacket on, and head outside, even for a few minutes. You'll never forget the silence or the smell of a clear winter night in Vermont, the crispness of the stars and the moon amazes even lifelong residents! Christmas day was perfect for a hike. On our way out from Nenorod, we saw many people with the right idea: out for a walk on a beautiful, sunny winter day to spend time with family and check out the operational Merck farm (with chickens, sheep, cows, horses, and more!), peer in the windows of the new sugar house, and see all the way to the High Peaks of New York!

Now that Christmas is past, businesses in the area are taking a little breather from their hectic holiday seasons! But not to worry, if you need to make returns, exchanges, or just want to do a little post-Christmas bargain hunting, most stores in the area are open for regular business hours (call to make sure!), and some even have great holiday sales (Nature's Closet in Bennington comes to mind, with big percentages off all their stuff, good if you're feeling a little chilly in that old winter jacket). Be sure to dine out, our area restaurants are still feeding all who enter, and they're a great place to get in out of the cold! Whatever your plans in southern Vermont, call ahead to check hours and sales or to make reservations. We got more snow last night, but the rest of the week leading up to New Year's looks clear! Before you head out to explore Southern Vermont in the winter time, turn on your radio and get the latest forecast, and be sure to drive safely! See you in 2005!

VT Route 279 now open

The new route Vermont 279 opened on Tuesday, October 12.
